Ps and Qs of Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are also commonly known as MDIs in the dental field. They are nothing but another form of dental implants. They perform the same function as done by the traditional dental implants without only the difference of being small in size. They are miniature titanium Dental implants that perform the function of tooth root replacement. Although they were originally designed to retain dentures, these days their purpose is to act as tooth root replacement. Usually they are used to stabilize the lower denture to eliminate the discomfort of a moving denture. They are thinner and smaller in size as compared to their bigger counterparts and this fact makes them more desirable and usable.

They are as thin as a tooth pick and are made of titanium. They are smaller versions of full -sized dental implants. Another factor to be noted about them is that they are easy to be fixed because of their small size. This fact add to their being used more and more by people. In addition to this, dentists have been able to discover multiple uses of MDIs which has added to their popularity. They have many advantages as compared to the traditional ones because of them being smaller in size. A more endearing factor about them is their being less expensive which makes it easily available to the masses. Hence a person in need of them does not get discouraged because of their prize as was the case in earlier days. They are much as 60 % cheaper than the conventional ones.

While the traditional ones required two stages in fixing, mini dental implants can be fixed only in a single stage. The entire procedure of fixing them take less than two hours. Therefore they are also known as same day implants or single day implants. It is also noted that no cutting or stitching is required in the procedure. It is a quick procedure which involves a small pilot hole into the jaw bone and then the MDI is screwed with only the ball head showing.

Mini dental implants are a solution for those who have lost their tooth or teeth accidentally or as a result of genetic misfortune. It also proves beneficial to those patients who cannot go for surgeries because of medical reasons. Although they have these many benefits, they do have some disadvantages also that are important to be noted. They are relatively less stable than the traditional ones. They also become a reason for bad breath if mouth is not cleaned properly. It is recommended that one should prefer normal dental implants over MDIs for reasons like more convenience and lesser care. They require more dexterity and painstaking while handling this makes lesser advantageous over the traditional implants. It is noted that the dentist whom the patient consults plays a very important role in helping him decide regarding what he should take up. Hence approaching a qualified and experienced dentist is very important.
